My name is Mahzuza Rahaman and I am a dual degree engineering student at Agnes Scott college. When choosing a major for my time at Agnes Scott, I had somewhat of a hard time. I was undecided for a long time, however the classes that I had taken in in the beginning of my time at Agnes helped me explore my interests and ultimately helped me choose the major that I wanted to complete at Agnes Scott. As a dual degree major, I majored in Psychology at Agnes scott and I will be majoring in Industrial engineering at Georgia Tech. I chose these majors because they are both something that I am interested in, and I believe that the skills that I have will help me in these fields of study. I wish to make a difference in my community, and I believe that I can do that by using my abilities of creativity and problem solving to contribute to my community. However, along with the skills and knowledge that I already had, Agnes Scott and my majors have taught me a lot and have also taught me new skills and abilities which I will be able to use in my future.
Through my classes that I have taken for my major, I have learned more about the abilities that I have as well as new skills which I would need in the future. It may seem that psychology and engineering are very different from one another, however, by taking both of these majors, I have gained a set of skills that will be beneficial to my future. As a psychology student, some of the SLO’s, or the students learning outcomes, that have been helpful are that, according to the Agnes Scott Academic Catalog, a student majoring in psychology should be able to “respect and use critical and creative thinking, skeptical inquiry, and when possible the scientific approach to solve problems” as well as “weigh evidence, tolerate ambiguity, act ethically, and reflect other values”. These SLO’s not only apply to my psychology major, and even to my engineering major, but I believe that these SLO’s can be extended to aid me in my future endeavors as well. Knowing when to use critical thinking or creative thinking, or both, is important to know so that the problem can be solved in the most efficient way possible. These skills will help me in my future career as well as outside of my career.
Along with the SLO’s from my majors, The SUMMIT SLO’s also taught me a considerable amount about the skills that I have, as well as new skills which tie along to them. In the Agnes Scott Academic Handbook. Some of the SLO’s which stuck with me were about demonstrating my knowledge, communicating effectively, applying creative expression, cultivating and maintaining interpersonal relationships, demonstrating confidence and motivation, and practicing continual improvement. Many of these learning objectives have more to do with than just school work and my future, these objectives can be stretched across all aspects of my life and the future. The SUMMIT learning objectives make sure that the skills which I gained will be beneficial to me as I go on through my life, with my career, the way that I see the world and connect to it as well as the people around me.
I feel that there were many instances throughout my time at Agnes where I demonstrated the connections between my skills and my education. I believe that the teamwork reflections that I have done could be a good artifact to demonstrate the skills which I have cultivated throughout the years. The reflections show how I grew in my role as a leader as well as a team member from before Agnes Scott to now. It also illustrates the way that the definition of teamwork has changed due to my experiences. Another artifact which would demonstrate what I have learned and experienced would be my Martinique reflection. This would demonstrate a unique experience I had at Agnes Scott and depict the global connections that I have made. The things I have learned due to the journey’s trip are something I will remember and carry through with me in the future.
Reflecting upon the learning objectives and the connections that I have made throughout my time at Agnes Scott shows me how much I have learned and developed from the experiences that I had at Agnes Scott. Not only do the things that I have learned and the connections that I have made shape the way that I view the world, but it shapes the way that I live in the world and in my community. I hope to continue learning and making connections through my experiences, and have these things help me grow and develop as a person.
